Our Parish

Our Story
Sacred Heart Church in St Kilda west was dedicated on 7th December 1884 with construction completed in 1922.
In 1914 the land where St Columba’s school and church now stand in Elwood was purchased. The school was built and opened first in 1918 and the church completed and opened in 1929.

Our School
In 1914 the Parish of Sacred Heart, West St Kilda, purchased the site where the school and church now stand and raised the funds to build the first two brick classrooms on
the site.
In April 1918 the School was opened and was run under the guidance of the Presentation Sisters with Mother Anthony Patterson as the first principal.

Our Mission
In 1982, Parish Priest Father Ernie Smith opened his door and shared a meal with a man who was hungry and experiencing homelessness.
It was this first act of generosity which led to the formation of Sacred Heart Mission to provide the basic necessities of life to people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage in the local community.
